When we were far and would not hear,
When we resisted love,
The Lord of mercy sought us still
And came to us from above.
When we were lost in pride and night,
And turned from holy light,
He did not leave us to ourselves,
But drew us from our plight.
How much more now, O faithful Lord,
How much more shall it be?
If love pursued us in our flight,
How much more, now we are free?
If grace could break the stony heart,
And soften all within,
How much more shall that mighty grace
Preserve us from our sin?
If mercy crossed the fearful gulf
That lay 'twixt earth and heaven,
How much more shall mercy keep
The souls whom it has forgiven?
If God did love us as His foes,
When every way was barred,
How much more now shall He uphold
The ones whom grace has spared?
If Christ received us when we fled,
And bore our grief and shame,
How much more now shall He sustain
The people of His Name?
O wondrous love, beyond all thought,
O grace that does not cease:
You sought us in our enmity,
And crowned us with Your peace.
The greater work Your hand has done;
The harder path You've trod.
How much more shall the lesser thing
Be finished now by God?
Therefore our hearts shall rest in hope,
And not in fear remain;
The Love that won the rebel soul
Will keep what it has gained.
So let us boast in God alone,
And in His Christ rejoice;
For we who once were far away
Now hear and know His voice.
How much more now, O faithful Lord,
How much more shall it be?
The Love that found us as enemies
Will keep us eternally.
