in 1948, south africa made racism the law. a system called apartheid was born meaning separtness. a system of instutitionalized racial segregation and discrimination implemented by the south africa government from 1948 to 1994. overnight
apartheid divided the nation into racial catégories : white, black, colored and indian. under this regime, the white minority which held political and économic power oppressed the black majority and other racial groups. apartheid laws dictated every aspect of life.( where you could live, where you could work, which school you could attend, even which bench you could sit on) while the white minority lived in comfort the black south africans majority were upprotted from their home and forced to live in separate areas called homelands or townships. often far from économic hubs. they were denied acess to quality education healthcare and jobs. publics facilities, transportation and even beaches were ségrégated. the infamous past laws required black citizens to carry a passbooks to justify their présence in white dominates areas making movement highly restricted. résistance to apartheid was fierce, organisations like the african national congress led by figures such as nelson mandela and desmond tutu mobilized against the regime through protests, strikes and international advocacy. in response the government used brutal force including arrests, torture, and massacres like the sharpeville massacre on 1960. global pressure including sanctions and boycotts intensified the fight against apartheid. after décades of struggle apartheid ended with the democratic élection of 1994 where nelson mandela became south africa’s first black président. apartheid’s legacy remains évident but the nations journey to réconciliation continues. now, south africa has still not recovored from it cause entire communities were destroyed, families torn appart. apartheid ended on paper but it’s impact didn’t.
